A buffing compound, also known as a polishing compound, is a product that employs abrasive grains and powders to smooth and shine substrates including metal, plastic, wood, and other materials. To make a compound, the abrasive grit is mixed with a grease solution and either solidified or liquified.
Polishing is frequently used to improve a product’s appearance, prevent instrument contamination, remove oxidation, provide a reflecting surface, or prevent pipe corrosion. Polishing is used in metallography and metallurgy to provide a smooth, defect-free surface for microstructural study of metals under a microscope. The polishing procedure can be done with silicon-based polishing pads or a diamond solution. Stainless steel can also be polished to improve its hygienic properties.
